Sometimes a design calls for simulating the look of an old color photo, old post card, or old print ad. The free Nostalgia plugin (windows only) from Xero does a very good job of this.

The plugin's web page offers examples of the uneven undersaturated look that is associated with some old photos or hand-colored post cards. But not shown is the other end of what the plugin can do, which is a high contrast, high saturation, almost posterized look that could fit some retro schemes.
