Default Replacing Lost Functionality in the Mac Keyboard Viewer

The Mac Keyboard Viewer used to make it possible to select the font from which a character would be inserted. I used this feature to inserti small caps and ornaments into MS Word documents. Unfortunately, selecting a font is no longer possible in the Keyboard Viewer that comes with the current version of OS X.

I can see the justification for limiting character insertions to Unicode characters, but it's really inconvenient to lose functionality I relied on.

Has anyone had experience with third-party utilities that includes the lost functionality? I've heard of PopChar, but I've never used.
