Default Image Hard Disk

I can't find the spot now where I was beginning to discuss this, so I'll just ask here. But it was about making an image of the hard disk to run in a virtual PC. And I guess it would be good to know if such an image could be used to restore the computer if the hard disk is replaces.

Any special kind of image? Any tips about how to store and use.

BTW, I own a copy of Acronis something or other, but I grew to dislike it very quickly, and it is no longer installed. So a different and simply solution would be nice.
