Default New web font display technologies

I have to admit to getting rather behind on this topic - but has anyone else noticed an increasing number of sites where certain fonts are really bitty and broken up? For example, if I look at the Onion (as I do from time to time), the headlines are very shabby. Wordpress.com is the same, and several others I visit.

I don't have time now to dig about in their stylesheets, but if it only happens to me then there's no point in wasting time on it!
