Default Looking for desktop publishing

Dear friends,

I'm a complete neophyte when it comes to publishing. Please bear with me as I have a question.

I'm preparing a book of collected letters and would like some advice on the desktop publishing software I should invest in. Please keep in mind my budget is modest-to-moderate.

The content is a collection of correspondence between myself and a family member. The formats are as follows:

1. My letters are MS Word format;
2. My pen pal's letters are PDF - he types them on a typewriter and then I scan them into PDF;
3. Photos in jpg.

So, I need software that can incorporate Word docs, PDF docs and photos.

I originally thought that MS Word could do it - I was dragging and dropping the PDFs into the Word doc. But there are several hundred pages and the document became unwieldy.

Please let me know if you have any advice.

Many thanks,

Paul Lalonde
