Default Oy — computer troubles!

I hated the whole notion of Mac Lion OS from first glimpse. I am not a person to welcome life in the cloud(s), anyway. Then I kept receiving Apple e-mails talking about a mandatory shift to iCloud, which would zap mac.com (or me.com) e-mail addresses at the end of June.

Then good old Eudora crashed. Probably from old age, sudden orphan status, overloaded files, or who knows exactly what. Spent days deleting files and poking around, and got it to work for a while, then other freezes/crashes. So I decided to use Mac Mail, which I had set up before. Don’t love it, but I guess it’s okay. But the intermittent pauses lost a couple of critical e-mails. I finally dug them out but that was a hairy few days.

The really stupid thing was that I had got it into my frazzled head that Lion was necessary to use iCloud (which you may remember I didn’t want anyway). Bizarrely, without much research, I installed the thing. Yoicks! Killed off my network utterly (or so I thought). I fiddled around for a while then gave up and called the local Apple tech. He had me up and running in five minutes — which was humiliating because I had one of those “normal” network failures that I should have fixed myself (unplug stuff, then restart it, and voila).

Anyway, I was happy, then went to dinner and to bed. And woke up to network errors again. If I shut down, unplug things, then restart it runs for a while, but a long pause kills it.

Turns out my Airport is old and loses signals. Today it has been good all day. I am so tired, and I still have to sign up with iCloud (instructions online, of course, but I should take care of it soon — the deadline is June 30).

Now have to make sure I can avoid automatic universal syncing of all devices. Shouldn’t take much more than another few days.

Just grumbling. I am thinking of setting up my “new” iMac, the 27-inch one that came last summer and has been sitting in its box in coffee table fashion next to the couch. And I am not going to set it up with Lion, at least not now. But we will be in the cloud.
