Default Any XML/XSL Experts?

Does anyone around here know much about using XSL? I am trying to use XML to populate an existing design with minimum change to the basic layout, a very complex 3 column table that the client likes.

The most commonly described way to move through an XML data source seems to assume one is creating a multi-row table. It does not work for me, but I cannot locate an alternative. I'll be more specific if someone thinks they can help.
