Default S F T P ?

While looking at potential new web hosts, I caught a notice from one of them that it will no longer permit FTP access, only SFTP (Secure FTP).

Fetch (Mac FTP software) cannot do it, but I downloaded Fugu, a free program that can, from the University of Michigan (which wrote and maintains it). A similar tool for Windows seems to be Filezilla (from SourceForge.net).

What I am curious about is can one always use SFTP? Or must the host enable it? And how common and serious are security problems with good old FTP?

I’ll ask this also over on INETPUB.
