Default OpenOffice difficulty

I was interested in whether the newer versions of Oracle/Sun/Star's OpenOffice would support MS Word's automatic numbering and bulleting, so I installed OO's Writer, but to my surprise it declined opening docx files and even an old doc file made with Word 2010. Do Word 2010 and OpenOffice not peacefully coexist?
