Default MS Office 2011 Mac deal

If you buy a qualifying Office 2008 package from August 1 through November 30, 2010 and then register with Microsoft, submit the 2008 purchase (dated receipt and product key) and formally request an upgrade no later than December 31, 2010, Microsoft will allow you to “download Office for Mac 2011 at no additional cost, or purchase a DVD.”

There is a caveat: the upgrade may not include the same programs as the Office 2008 product.

Which means that you could get the Office 2011 home and student edition for the cost of the single-user 2008 version — which according to Macintouch lists at $119 (less at Amazon).

From what I have heard, Office 2008 had some problems, especially for cross-platform file exchanges. No idea what Office 2011 will cost, of course (wouldn’t it be funny if the price was lower than the 2008 price?). Or what changes the newer version will bring (not to mention which or what apps it will include).

Nor do I know if there is a similar deal for Windows users.
