Default Adobe Reader 9.3 released...

Adobe has released Reader version 9.3. I just installed it and it was the usual pitaness between Adobe wanting me to use their download manager (discovered that in FF if you cancel the download manager prompt, the software downloads just fine), finding what little goodies Adobe, in their infinite wisdom, has hidden behind the scenes and then spending time getting my prefs set.

Using Mike Lin's StartUP Control Panel--lovely little app--I discovered "Adbobe ARM" (adobearm.exe) and "Adobe Reader Speed Launcher" both of which I immediately unchecked (so they wouldn't load at startup) and rebooted to make sure they were not currrently running on my system.

"ARM" stands for Acrobat Reader Manager (and has nothing to to with the "ARM" that deals with mobile devices) and apparently phones home to automatically update Reader--whether you want it to do that or not.

The betnews.com article for January 13th quotes Adobe Senior Security Researcher Kyle Randolph--from January 12th blog entry:

"The new updater improves the user experience and helps users stay up to date with the new option of receiving security updates automatically, via background updates, which have been shown to have better patch adoption..."

Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up...
