Default Javascript library-file link not recognized

Got another problem here, folks, and I'm hoping you can help.

As I noted in my last post, I'm doing exercises from an HTML textbook dated 2006. Right now I'm looking at altering objects using Javascript. The goal is to move some divs and hide others. I have the following block in the HTML page file:
<script src="av_scripts.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

<script type="text/javascript">

function placeObjects() {

<body onload="placeObjects()">
The functions placeIt and hideIt are in the external library file. The problem is that the browser simply refuses to recognize the link to the external file. If I copy the functions into the script block in the HTML file, it all works. Leave them in the library file, it doesn't work. This indicates the problem is in the link to the library file. I've looked at that line, checked it, retyped it, checked filenames, changed filenames, re-saved the js file through a pure text editor -- nothing works. What's wrong?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
