Default AOL rebrands itself: Aol.

Oy. I cannot quite figure out how AOL made this decision:

The article “AOL Revamping Its Logo, Hoping to Revive the Brand,” in today’s N.Y. Times attempts to explain — certainly better than I can.

Someone from the design firm is quoted as saying the period was added to suggest confidence and “completeness." It is also thought of as “the AOL dot.”

I guess the question is whether anything can salvage the AOL brand. Those of us who endured its handling (should I say trashing?) of CompuServe may especially wonder about AOL’s marketing instincts.
