Default Measure for Measure

I am increasingly fed up with the several different ways of measuring things. The latest for me is the new window blind for the bathroom, where different suppliers wanted inches, or centimetres, or millimeters. And I still got it wrong and it was a little too wide.

Recipes in the kitchen are randomly ounces and grams. Half the roads are in miles and the rest in kilos. Milk is sold me in pounds, pints or kilos. Priced in pounds, dollars or Euros. Fields are acres or hectares. My new rubbish wheely-bin is a new conversion; 240 litres or 110 kilos; what sort of a conversion is that?

How many millimetres to the thou? And how come everyone uses hours and minutes?
