Default It's time for a change

Time Machine has lost its ability to use my network drive and our Internet connection is driving me nuts.

Most (?) of the time we get a good broadband speed (6.24 Mbps this morning) but some days it's appalling and keeps dropping to the extent that Safari keeps reporting we have no connection at all. If I restart the modem/router then generally everything works fine for half an hour or so.

I suspect the router (a Belkin N1 Vision) as the problems started around the time that was fitted.

So the time has come to rethink things. I'm thinking of:

1. Replacing the modem/router with a non wireless one (see 2, below). The question is whether I go for an expensive one such as the Draytek or would a cheap one such as the one provided by my ISP be just as good? I don't (I think) want one with any sophisticated features - just one that will provide a fast, reliable connection and decent firewall facilities.

2. Buying an Apple Time Capsule to provide a backup and a wireless network. The advantage of the N1 Vision is that it has a good WiFi signal that will go through 3 foot of granite. Apple's hype says that the Time Capsule "uses the latest 802.11n wireless technology so you can enjoy up to five times the performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks." Will it be as good as the Belkin N1, I wonder.

3. Sometime I guess I'll have to upgrade to Snow Leopard so I might as well do it now and change everything at once. Why go for a slow and boring incremental change when I could chuck all my eggs into one basket. So I'm thinking that maybe I could upgrade OSX and let the MacBook wake up to find it has a new network and a new backup resource. After all, humanity didn't get to where it is now without living on the edge from time to time.
