Default Serif PagePlus X3 PDF problem

Hello,

First time post!

I have used Serif packages for basic DTP for many years. I am now having to use PDF files with my work but pageplus has a problem opening them correctly, something to do with embedded fonts etc. so I was told, even though Serif claim pageplus works well with PDF files?

I have recently downloaded a trial version of Indesign but the cost factor and learning curve may prove prohibitive to me.

Can anybody recommend more of a budget/less expensive package that would open all PDF files in their original state and allow you to crop and/or resize and position them on a page?

Thanks in advance.
