Default Web font embedding proposal

Seems as if the web font embedding issue is heating up.

Proposals, rebuttals, regrets, mulling over considerations, cranky comments, and more from font makers, OS suppliers, W3C developers, and others on Typophile, which also has links to additional information.

Users are likely to be blind-sided by font-embedding. Discussion of the different approaches is pretty technical (and boring to many), so most are likely to simply wait to see what happens.

Meanwhile, FireFox 3.5 (due out shortly) and Safari 3 and 4 (on the Mac at least) already support the new CSS rules that enable font embedding, and if you visit a site that offers embeddable fonts, you are likely to be able to view sites with those browsers.

Anyway, lots to think about.

Minutes of a W3C meeting in October that outlines some of the issues.
