Default Emigre: Mrs Eaves updated

Zuzana Licko’s Mrs Eaves — a “Baskerville” of unusual form — has been an Emigre bestseller almost from its introduction in 1996. This is despite some controversy about the design: the unexpected widths of some characters, and especially, the strangely open letter-spacing. Critics may have grumbled, but we see Mrs Eaves all over the place.

Now Emigre has released a new collection, Mrs Eaves XL, and marked the release with one of the company’s charming specimen books. The new design has a larger x-height compensated for by shorter ascenders and descenders, and tighter spacing. It is being released in regular and narrow widths.

Without the specimen booklet, the best way to preview the new styles is at the web site: click on the packages in the list to view specimen settings.

My first impression is that the new fonts will be more usable in conventional work, but that much of the distinctive style is gone, for better or worse.

It is definitely worth a look.
