Default IE REQUIRES www!

One of my clients, running XP SP3 and IE7 has an odd issue. Any site for which www is a normal part of the URL requires the www. UNLESS one enters http://. Firefox works as normal, meaning that for most sites, one can just enter, for example, latimes.com, instead of www.latimes.com.

I am at a loss to explain or fix. Any thoughts?
