Default Automatic Updaters

I have been reading the Acrobat updater thread, but I want to be more general.

First, Firefox insists on doing updates, and I don't see how to control that. Maybe someone else knows.

Second, WindowsXP sometimes does updates when it is shutting down, telling me to be patient. Well, maybe I am going out and don't care, but maybe I shut it down to reboot a little later with a fresh system.

Third, and this one is a bit off the wall: On the IBM mainframes, many years ago, the Job Control Language (JCL, for running batch programs) had a nifty program called IEFBR14. Branch on Register 14, which means that it did nothing whatever except go back to the operating system for the next step. This was useful, and I wonder whether someone has written the same kind of executable for MAC and Windows. If you want to disable something, copy the IEFBR14.EXE routine as the new name you want to disable, place it strategically, and nothing happens, just what you might want. Some programs get upset if they don't find the executable they expect to find. This way, they would find it.
