Default InDesign index snafu

Folks--

InDesign CS3 (Mac).

I've been building an index for a book project I'm working on. I set up style sheets for the index, including two character styles, which I call "Index Regular" and "Index Bold". The idea is that any references to illustrations will have the page number set in bold text; all the rest of the text is "regular". After entering umpteen thousand references, I go ahead and build the index.

Trouble is, when ID finally spits out the index, all my page numbers that were supposed to be set in "Index Bold" look the same as the "Index Regular" text. Why? Because when I go back and check the Page Reference Options pane (see attached image), my Number Style Overrides (which I had set to "Index Bold") have mysteriously all been set to the style "[None]".

After a momentary fit of panic, I realized that I can easily work around the problem in the final index output by simply doing a search-and-replace for "digits with the style [none]" to "style 'Index Bold'", which saved my bacon.

Question is, why did all my overrides get set to the style [none] when I built the index? The indexed documents are in the form of a Book (in the InDesign sense), and I'm sure I had the style sheets synchronized throughout.

Has anybody else seen this? Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug? Otherwise, InDesign has always performed like a trooper.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Cheers,
