Default Book Cover design & layout

I am in the process of setting up a large number of old letters for publishing and have most of the data almost ready. My next task will be to design a cover and I have no idea how. I can find plenty of sites on the Net that give advice on what it should look like but very little about the actual layout and in particular the spine. Can anyone suggest something I could read? I am using Serif PagePlusX3.
