Default Scaling images

If I declare the image width and height to 50%, the image will scale with the width of the <div> it is inside. In MSIE and FF at least, in Safari this doesn't work, but if I do not declare the image height it does scale as I want it to in Safari as well.

I have worked out the maximum image size required (as I am using min and max page width).

Are there any negative side effects of not declaring the image height (other than image space will not be on page before image has loaded)?
