Default Evert Bloemsma

The gifted type designer Evert Bloemsma of the Netherlands, born only in 1958, died last week.

You may not recognize his name (at least not instantly) but he designed several significant fonts for Font Shop: FF Balance (1993), FF Cocon (1998), FF Avance (2000), and FF Legato (2004).

Bloemsma’s web site
is still operating (though I do not know for how long), and you can get a sense of his work there. There was also an interesting discussion about and with him on the Typophile forums around the time Legato was released last year.

Many copy-cat or derivative fonts appear every month. Bloemsma was an original, for better or worse (I tend to think for better). Although I never met him, I am very sorry that he has died so young.
