Default Comments on WordPress sites

For the past couple of years I forbade comments on my WordPress sites. Then I thought I would try it out, and sure enough, I got one. But it wasn’t what I would call a comment — it was a link to the replyer’s blog, where he had a reference to mine.

Is that all that desirable? What do I get out of it?

Not sure I understand the point.
