Default Installing SCSI scanners

My ancient scanners -- HP IICX flatbed and Polaroid SprintScan Plus slide scanner -- worked fine on my old PC (XP). I can't get them to work on the new PC (also XP). I can't remember what I had to do to install them on my old PC. I thought I just connected them to the SCSI doodad and turned on the PC. I don't recall having any trouble installing them.

I had to buy a new SCSI cable for the new PC (it has newfangled micro-mini external SCSI connector thingies ) so I guess it's possible the cable is defective, but those cables are too expensive for me to consider buying another one to experiment with.

Do I need to install scanner drivers BEFORE hooking up the scanners?

Is there someplace to check (in the BIOS or something) to make sure the external SCSI connections on the new PC are "live"?

Yeah, I know I can buy a new USB flatbed for a fraction of what I paid for the IIcx, but it's the slide scanner I'd prefer not to replace. I think those are still pretty pricey. And I am skeptical about the quality of slide scans from "consumer" grade flatbeds.
