Default Fixed width and too wide

Might be my imagination. I remember a time when most web pages would automatically narrow themselves to to fit my browser screen. And ones that did not narrow themselves were usually on sites that were not well done in most ways. But these days, I'm finding more and more web pages that have wide static widths. Even ones on slick-looking commercial sites.

Thoughts?
