Exclamation Do you use Outlook and AVG?

If you do, be aware that AVG's email scanner in Outlook can cause problems by deleting legitimate messages altogether without warning.

I'd been having this problem intermittently for months, and yesterday I snapped and spent half a day tracking it down.

Symptoms: you suddenly stop receiving expected email from certain addresses (which can be trusted ones), but if you watch Outlook closely during a send/receive, you can see messages flashing up at the top of the Inbox then disappearing. (And also hear the telltale "bong" or whatever alert you have set.)

Previously, I always left copies of messages on the server for three days so I had a backup, by using the webmail interface to see what was there. But now I have turned off the scanner and all seems to be back to normal.

This particular problem was with Outlook 2003 and AVG 7.5 Pro - but from what I've read, any email virus scanner can cause problems by interfering with the mail conversation with any version of Outlook.

If you turn off the scanner, it is perhaps a wise precaution to turn off the reading pane in the Inbox view, although I only get 2 or 3 virus-infested messages a month these days.

I was also advised by an MVP to run Outlook using this switch to turn off any view setting that might cause problems (but haven't done so!):

outlook.exe /cleanviews
