Well...if it's anything like our Giant has become, it's a sad thing. The man who started Giant--Izzy Cohen--was quite well thought of in this area and he ran the company very well for both the shoppers and his employees and I'm sure he's spinning in his grave over what its become...

I have become a fan of Harris Teeter...I'd not done much shopping there but when Sandy (woman who owns/runs Zo's barn) mentioned that they carried Demerara sugar--lovely in coffee-- at a very reasonable price, I went in to get some and discovered that they carry a nice line of their own prepared foods...for example, they usually have small apple smoked pork loins along with rotisserie chicken, turkey breasts, etc. that are really quite tasty and quite reasonably priced (usually $2.75-$4-ish)--I'd never cook one myself--and they have really lovely cakes both sliced and whole and they carry Newman's Own coffee at MUCH better price than Whole Foods ($6.50-ish vs. WF's $12!)...
