Default NYT Mag gets new display/caption face

A note in the March 9, 2008 issue of the Sunday NYT Magazine has a little note on the contents page:
About the type
In this issue we introduce a new typeface for use in headlines, subheads and captions. It’s called Sunday. Commissioned by The New York Times Magazine for our exclusive use, Sunday was drawn by the type designers Eric Olson and Nicole Dotin of the Process Type Foundry.
I checked the Process web site, but there is no mention of this commission there (let alone a showing). There is a display of all their commercial designs.

The face that seems closest to Sunday of their designs is Seravek, but it has a wider range. Perhaps Sunday is more or less a subset.

Looks okay. Works well in caption sizes, which is a good thing. But the Times Magazine has a bit of a split personality. Left to its own predelictions, the display type gets inventive, using all sorts of typefaces (and even some lettering). Then they decide they will give up all that and use a single font. The most disastrous of those experiments occurred when they decided to use Cheltenham in a few weights. That quietly ceased without notice after some time.

Now we seem to have a hybrid. Standing items, including Safire’s “On Language” column, still make use of a variety of typefaces for titles; captions and some other type are in the new Sunday face. Or maybe this issue is a transition issue. Who knows?

Anyway, it is nice to see a smallish “indy” type design firm get such a commission. Take a look.
