Default PDF image compression problem

I have to regularly prepare PDFs of a certain type of document including some branding logos on the cover, imprint pages and headers.

I edit a pro-forma Word doc with the changes, then use the PDFmaker (from version 6) to make the PDF.

Usually, but not always, the logos are badly "fuzzed up" by the conversion, as you can see from the attachment. The GIF screen shots are fine.

These are 80% quality JPEG files, placed in the Word document at 100% size at 300 DPI. The settings for Acrobat are High quality and to downsample images above 450DPI, so they should stay untouched. (The basic setting for the file is 600DPI.)

I've fiddled about with all sorts of settings but the only way I found to fix it is to paste in a fresh copy of the original image immediately before distilling. It usually seems to 'stick' for a couple of editing sessions, then goes blooey again.

Any ideas what's going on? I know Word's image management is problematic, but this is plain daft!
