Default AquaBrowser Catalog Tool

is now the catalog search tool at The Free Library of Philadelphia.

There is very little on the Free Library page to explain its use, and the AquaBrowser is not any better. They tell me about its advantages at length, and tell me that 80% of the users of the traditional catalogs don't know what they are looking for. Maybe so, but if I want to know if the library has any books by author John Fund, I don't want to know all those completely irrelevant entries that I am given. I want the catalog browser to tell me that they don't have any books by author John Fund.

I don't mind that they give me a new catalog tool, which was not there a few weeks ago. I do want instructions, and I do want to be able to use the old catalog tool, which allowed me to put in author names, titles, and the like, just like I did years ago with the paper card catalog.

Of course, the Amazon and the Barnes and Noble web sites still provide me with book information by author and title, and they still provide me with enough information to ask for an Interlibrary Loan when the Free Library of Philadelphia doesn't have a book. The Interlibrary Loan desk does want assurance that the library doesn't have the book already, which is reasonable, but the new AquaBrowser tool doesn't lend itself to that search.
