Default Printing’s Alive (video)

Fell into a bunch of videos on printing. Some were humdrum, ads for various businesses. But some are really worth a couple of minutes. Once you get to this YouTube collection, you can scroll down to many more. Here are some that I like.

Kind of strange, and too long, assuming it really is marketing, but the last few minutes are great. He really got to me when he talked about loving the smell of ink — me too. I can remember walking into certain buildings in lower Manhattan, places with many printing businesses in them, and the whole place would smell of ink. Yum.

And while you’re at it, a lovely little film on letterpress printing: “A look that goes straight back to Gutenberg. It is thick, tangible.”
Old Skool Printing

Really nice: “Tramp,” with typography.

A short TV interview with Stephen Heller on typeface design: Cameos from Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones.

Wild and charming 1926 book, Abeceda by Karel Teige showing people posing with type characters. Narrative, though not in English (possibly Czech).

The modern way to make wood type for letterpress printing, using an industrial router, I guess, probably driven by template, but nothing is explained. So a couple of minutes may be enough.
