Default Lost UK personal records

  • 25 million child benefit records on CDs lost in the post.
  • The tax offices in Tyne and Wear lost two more unencrypted discs
  • MoD loses a laptop with details of 600,000 would-be recruits
  • A mail sack with thousands of paper records was found on a traffic island.
Yes these things happen. Laptops do get stolen from parked cars. Things do get lost in the post. But more and more details about me are being stored on central databases, and access to my details seems to be available to every policeman, nurse, teacher, civil servant, and any half competent hacker.

Should I worry about this? Why not have everyone put all these details up on the Internet and let everyone browse.

There are also concerns about accuracy. They tell me 50% of the data held about me is wrong, and they do not really know which 50%. I do tend to enter random data for any field that I think is over intrusive.

Some countries already have a national ID number for everyone. In the UK they are threatening to give me an ID card. This would be good for thieves and robbers, they can more easily tie the several files together.
