Default Layer Masks: Which Version?

I have a very high contrast image that needs repair. It appears that layer masks are a good starting place for combining a two versions of the image. Does anyone here know in which version of Photoshop they first appeared. I do not see them in CS.

I suspect they will make it worth my while to upgrade to CS3.
