Default Illustrator starts then dies

Well, this is odd. (Why is it that so many of my remarks on life start that way?)

All of too sudden, as Mom says, when Illustrator finishes waking up, it displays an alert "Could not complete the operation." When I OK out of that box, Illustrator disappears.

I thought "Aha, not enough RAM" so I closed Firefox (Mr. RAMpig), but the symptom didn't change.

InDesign and Photoshop start fine.
