Default Font frustration

One aspect of fonts that tends to drive me 'round the bend is that there doesn't seem to be a standard of font sizes. A 14-pt lower-case "a" in something like Lucida Bright seems many times bigger than a 14-pt lower-case "a" in Vivaldi. (I know the two are not used in the same circumstances, but they were examples that came to mind.). I find this particularly problematic when choosing among title font possibilities.

Are there strategies that you DTP experts use to help you with font sizes?
