Default Font puzzle

After years of problem free font management (using Mac OS 10.4.10 on a Dual 2.3 G5 and FontAgent Pro) suddenly I have problems. I think Helvetica is at the root of the matter.

Yesterday everything worked fine; today text is displaying as garbage in certain applications. I first noticed it in RapidWeaver, where a site I was working on displayed text as a load of capitals and accented characters. In the font menu the font name is similarly garbled, but as it falls between Geneva and Lucida I suspect it is Helvetica. The same scrambling is happening in TextEdit. But MS Word and Quark 7.3 display Helvetica normally. (Is that because they have their own private font caches?)

Usually I keep the system Helvetica.dfont turned off and use my ancient Postscript Helveticas that came with a 1990s LaserWriter. So I've tried reinstalling the Postscript version from the original CD, to no avail.

I've tried switching off FontAgent Pro's control of the system fonts, and switching it back on again, but it makes no difference. I've deleted font caches (using Smasher). I've restarted. I've repaired permissions. I've rebuilt the directory (with Disk Warrior). Nothing seems to help.

Anyone got any ideas?
