Default Reduce File Size does WHAT?

Oy. I created a PDF in Acrobat 7, and it came out to 4.5MB. I did Reduce File Size, which says "setting compatibility to newer versions of Acrobat will allow greater reduction in file size." Oh yeah?

Select version 7.0: 2.3MB
Select version 6.0: 2.3MB (same # bytes)
Select version 5.0: 634KB (from the pre-shrunk v6 PDF)
Select version 5.0: 826KB (shrinking directly from the original 4.5MB file)

Am I missing something?

deB

p.s.
