Default Magdalen Nabb, dead at 60

Magdalen Nabb has long been one of my favorite mystery writers, so I was sorry to see an obituary about her in this morning’s newspaper. She died of a stroke while horseback riding in Florence on August 18. The Telegraph published a detailed obituary on August 22.

Her stories do a good job of describing the locale (without being travelogs). Beyond that, she was an excellent writer, which does make a difference (books that are all plot or adventure do not inspire devotion, at least not from me). I’m not sure why, but Nabb’s books were never as popular or as easy to find as they deserved to be.

Here is a list in case you want to look for them:
  • Death of an Englishman (1981)
  • Death of a Dutchman (1982)
  • Death in Springtime (1983)
  • Death in Autumn (1984)
  • The Marshal and the Murderer (1987)
  • The Marshal and the Madwoman (1988)
  • The Marshal’s Own Case (1990)
  • The Marshal Makes His Report (1991)
  • The Marshal at the Villa Torrini (1993)
  • The Monster of Florence (1996)
  • Property of Blood (1999)
  • Some Bitter Taste (2002)
  • The Innocent (2005)
  • Vita Nuova (due out spring 2008)
  • The Prosecutor (not a Guarnaccia book, 1986)
