Default Acrobat error: Array length is out of range

We occasionally see this error on PDFs supplied by clients, rather than made by us here <smug smile>. The Adobe website says it happens when all the following criteria are met:
1. The PDF is made from a Quark document.
2. The Quark OPI Xtension is loaded.
3. OPI comments are not turned off throughout the PDF-making process.
4. The path length for one or more linked items in the Quark document exceeds 255 characters.

Usually we just ask the designer to dump OPI and send a replacement PDF, but what if he's shoved off on holiday for three weeks? Aargh!!!

If you open one of these dodgy PDFs in Acrobat, and ignore the error message, the file either won't print properly (easy to spot), or it will display incorrectly and print the same (gulp!).

If you place the file in InDesign, then export as a new PDF, the error message is removed, but so is some of the artwork - and, in the second case from the previous para, you might not even know.

I was able to get round it today by opening the file in OSX's Preview, then saving as a new PDF from the print menu: amazingly, it worked. Might not every time, but it's worth a shot if you can't get a replacement file.
