I have been reading on Web Hosting Talk about hosting, and see there are many recommendations for Cartika. It certainly sounds good, with a theoretically highly reliable redundant cluster setup. For now the $15 (Canadian) 5GB/350MB site should be fine for me.
Cartika does not offer tons of space or bandwidth (GoDaddy promises 250GB of bandwidth for its 5GB package, for example — way more than my needs). It uses Hemisphere, not cPanel, for the control panel. We had Hemisphere on one host (either 1and1 or IXWeb) when we were preparing to move DTP Forum off of CompuServe. I was thinking of Host Gator, but it seems to be a lightning rod for criticism, at least among the Web Hosting Talk crowd (which seems to be relatively independent compared to most of the web sites that rate hosts.) I did not see a huge number of negative reports about Host Gator, but several of the complaints were about over-selling, a problem I think I have had my fill of. It’s not that I need the very best service and reliability for the particular site I am working on, but do like to test hosts for future possibilities, and the best way I know to do that is to live with one for a while. __________________ :: |
