Default Illustrator CS2: broken text problem

So I'm opening EPS files in Illustrator CS2 that were orignally created in Freehand and the text appears broken in several places. Seems to me that in an older version of Illustrator one could select multiple text objects and combine them. Is that no longer possible?

After Googling a bit, the only solution I've found is to select all the broken bits and copy them, then create a new area text object and paste them in. This is a decent fix but it's quite a few more steps than the old method. Is this the best method?

TIA
