Default Advice on fixing updated Google description

One of my clients has noticed that the description given in the results for Google is about 6 weeks out of date. It's only a very new site, but he's anxious to get the much more SE friendly content that is there now showing up. What little reading I've had time to do suggests that getting more inbound links will draw googlebot in more often - any other tips from the gurus?

(He doesn't have an XML sitemap yet...)
