Default How to Determine Web Font

I use Firefox 2.0.0.2 on my W98 system. I like to read on-line the Washington Post. In Firefox, the rendering of the text of articles appears to be a different font when the same page is viewed with other browsers.

For all intents and purposes, it looks like Times New Roman in other browsers, but something with a heavier if not a different face within Firefox. For one, "G" comes out differently.

I looked at the font settings in Firefox, and the default is Times New Roman, but upon further inspection, the browser is set to "Serif" for proportional use. Overall, the Firefox browser encoding is set to Western ISO-8859-1, while my version of IE6 uses Unicode-8 as the default.

I tried viewing the Page Source, but I think the fonts specified therein get overridden by the browser.

Any ideas on what I am seeing or how I could determine what it is I am seeing with any browser would be appreciated. For comparisons, a random Washington Post article is http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...030702454.html
