Default Museum of Printing

Like many people who live near historic/touristy places, I rarely go to local museums and such. But today I went to the Museum of Printing in North Andover, MA, and it's a treat.

It's a thoroughly cluttered place, full of old presses, hot metal machines, and a kind of guided tour of composition tools. It also has a big and growing library, which includes, among other things, the entire set of Linotype font drawings from which matrices were made.

If you're in the Boston area and like such things, it's worth a visit. (Note that North Andover is not exactly downtown, and a car is almost certainly the only practical way to get there. If you have your own plane, you can fly into Lawrence Municipal Airport, which is nearby.)

Highly recommended. I took a lot of pictures, and attach a few.
- A Photon 200, the first photocomposer I ever saw and used (indirectly)
- A Linotype machine, in working condition
- A Linotype font drawing.

I looked over the register of visitors. One recent visitor was Mike Parker, who, some of you will remember, was once president of Bitstream.
