Default File corruption in backup copies

I've been using Handy Backup to copy files from folder/file systems to a duplicate folder/file system on an external USB hard drive that is running NTFS compression. I happened to notice some jpegs on the external drive that showed signed of corruption (multi-color bands at bottom of image). The file size remained unchanged. So I am running a CRC comparison utility. Just doing a quick look, I also see it affecting gif, png, psd, zip, wav, swf, exe, and mxp files. Maybe it is random.

Anyway, I don't know what part of the system to blame, but I thought I better give a heads up in case others are doing something similar.
