Default Is Pentium D ready for prime time now?

This might be cross posting, but I have to figure this out before my discount slips away. I'm going to buy a new computer, and can't decide whether to go with a Pentium 4, which has proven itself over time. Or the Pentium D, which might be a door to the future, but might not be the best choice for existing software.

Any thoughts on this? The computer will be running XP Pro.
