Default Font Patents In the US

I found an article that says there are 600 fonts patented in the US.

Seems kinda high to me.

The google patent search is kinda fun to play around with. It's amazing that a company can be so well marketed that another company allows them to re-skin their website. What does the US patent search office get out of it? Traffic I guess. But what do they gain from traffic if they are not selling anything? I guess I am going off topic from my own post
