Default Cellphone overload

I seldom use my mobile phone, but going to the Shoreham Airshow with 200,000 other people I wanted to check to find out where the hell the other two people in my party had wandered off to. All I got was the 'not on line' message. And yes their phone was switched on. A bit odd we thought. Is this a normal thing that happens when 200.000 people are using the same signal mast at the same time?
